SEPTEMBER 2010 Albright United Methodist Church Newsletter Volume 11, No. 9 September 1, 2010 |
The Open Door Sunday School Class |
Some people think preachers shouldn’t talk about politics. Others think that pastors don’t know anything about subjects like sex. And certainly we don’t want to hear about money in the church!
Have you ever heard the old Cyndi Lauper song “Money Changes Everything”? What about this old saying, “Money makes the world go around”?
Did Jesus ever say anything about money? Actually, the answer is “Yes” because Jesus had a lot to say about money. On one occasion he said, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Luke 12:34)
Did you know it is very easy to tell what someone’s priorities are? Just look at their calendar and their checkbook. Where they spend their time and where they spend their money reveals their priorities!
Let’s be very practical: it takes money to pay the light bills at church. That’s one very important reason we ask people to give.
But we also believe that God asks us to give so that we can learn to be totally dependent on God and not on ourselves. When we give an offering of money to God (off “the top”) we are saying to God, “God, I trust you to get me through on what’s left from my paycheck after I give to You.” If you give to God first, the bottom line is trusting God on what’s left over. And when we give, we are trusting God to use those resources however God wants (and not how we necessarily want!)
And we also believe that there are far more important things than keeping the lights on! Last month, the offerings at Albright Church:
l provided resources for our children, youth, and adults in Sunday School this summer
l kept our worship on the local cable station on Wednesday evenings
l helped 17 college ministries across the state begin preparations for a new school year
l helped our UM ministries here in Oklahoma with those who suffer from chemical addictions
l assisted with at least 125 new United Methodist Churches that were started in the last year across the nation
l and much, much more!
For those who are still reading this far, this isn’t about the “preacher” talking about money! (Okay, in a way, it is!) But, it’s really about practicing the discipline of “Extravagant Generosity.” We believe God extravagantly gives to us so we give extravagantly back to God! And together we can make a positive difference in the world. We want to make the world a better place. We want to make a Christian difference in the world! Right?!
Pastor Scott
Bibles and Teacher Appreciation - On Sunday, September 12th, we will be presenting Bibles to third graders and thanking all teachers in our church during worship.
Charge Conference - September 26th at 6:00 p.m. is our Annual Charge Conference. We invite and encourage everyone to attend.
UMW - You are invited to Albright's General Meeting of the United Methodist Women at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 7th. The Board will serve desserts and punch. Kathy Caldron will be speaking and showing slides from her recent trip to Russia. All men and women are welcome. Come join us!
Biggest Loser – Albright Edition
The final weigh-in is Sunday, September 19th after the worship service. The person with the highest percentage of weight loss will win $170.00! Dr. Steve McLean will do the confidential weigh-in and Thelma Stewart will do blood pressure checks. Get in your “last chance workouts”!
Family Life will host a Family Bingo & Chili Dog night on SATURDAY , September 18th, 6:00-8:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall. There will be prizes as well as a Silent Auction which will consist of baskets put together by the Sunday School Classes. So, classes need to get together and come up with an idea for their basket or baskets and let's see if we can raise some money towards our apportionments.
If anyone would like to donate an item to be given away, please feel free to do so. You can leave it in the church office or give it to a Family Life Committee member. There will be Bingo prizes for adults and kids, so bring the whole family and ask a friend to come. We will have plenty of Chili Dogs and all the fixin's.
If you have questions, please call Sandy Kanelakos, 762-8829 or Traci Schulz, 765-3559 or ask any of the Family Life committee members, Judy Throop, Karen McClelland, Don and Joyce Appleman, Jessica Marlow, or Alberta Depew.
Big birthday wishes go out to Catherine Graham and Margaret Cantrell. Catherine will celebrate her 100th birthday on September 10th and Margaret will celebrate her 100th birthday on September 27th!
Bible Studies
"Disciple Bible Study" will be offered this year at Albright. This is an overview of the entire Bible. In 34 weeks, you will read about 80% of the Bible. It takes a high level of commitment (about 30 minutes of reading six days a week). Participants meet on a weekly basis for two hours with others for a short video and discussion (and snacks!) If you are interested in Disciple Bible Study, please let Scott Spencer know ASAP. We will meet on Sunday evenings, 6 - 8 p.m. beginning Sept. 12. The study manuals cost $35. Please let Scott know if you need childcare.
Women's Bible Study - Cheryl Taylor Long will be leading a Women's Bible Study in her home this fall beginning on September 13th at 7:00 p.m. The group will be studying the Beth Moore, updated and revised, study “Breaking Free.” It's all about discovering the transforming power of Christian freedom, freeing ourselves from things in our past, and in our lives, that have held us in a bondage. God intended for us to know and believe Him, glorify Him, experience His peace, and enjoy His presence. The study will have 11 sessions, including the introduction meeting. The workbook will cost $15.00 The weekly homework, will take about 2 hours total to complete. If anyone has questions or would like to discuss the details, possibility of childcare, etc., please call Cheryl in the evenings.
The Brown Bag Bible Study Group will resume their study on the book of Revelation on Friday, September 3rd. Bring your lunch and join us every Friday at noon.
UMW Salad Luncheon - That time is almost here again. A UMW salad luncheon and bake sale. I will center in on the Bake Sale and ask you all to start thinking of your wonderful goodies that you always bring. Zenna Wright and Irene Senseman left big shoes to fill and we are trying our best each year to do that. If I said I smell pies and cakes and rolls, would you think the heat has me??? Make it come true October 8th and lets have a successful Bake Sale as only Albright can do. - Donna Evans
Help Needed: I am working on earning my Girl Scout Silver Award - the highest award a Cadet Girl Scout can earn. The project I will be doing to earn the award is redoing the youth room. I will be painting, redoing the floor, recovering the couches or purchasing futons, and other misc. decorating. I am in need of financial assistance to purchase materials or a donation of needed items. If you would like to help financially you can turn the money into Chera in the office and let her know it is for Katie Schulz's Silver Project. If you have materials to donate you can call me or my mom and dad at 765-3559, or let Scott or Tommie know. If you would like to volunteer to help me paint, etc. I would be very greatful, just let me know. Thank you to the Journey of Hope Sunday School Class for their wonderful donation.
God Bless. Katelynn Schulz
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and family of Marge Howard and Mercedes Hensley. |

Dear Albright, I want to thank you all so very much for the many calls, cards, your concerns & prayers over these months of healing. The 2 surgeries on my hand/arm haven't gone quite as planned, and may require "stabilizing"...my opposite shoulder tear hasn't healed as hoped. But I feel so blessed to have the use that I do have now, and I'm getting used to my early retirement! The care committee's cards have put so many smiles on my face. It's truly a blessing to be back with all of you and your prayers mean so very much to me. Sandy Carnero
Thanks to everyone at Albright again for the money and checks. Everything that was done for me was such a nice surprise! I do hope everything is going well with the church.
Love, Jason Stillwell
Once again you have blessed us with many backpacks and school supplies. The smiles on the children's faces and the thank you's are passed on to you.
With God's Love,
Janell Bateman
